From the Dark Tower

From the Dark Tower Character List

Speaker

The speaker of the poem uses the plural pronoun "we." It is clearly implied that the speaker is Black, when they describe the beauty of the "night" being no less than that of the "white stars." As they show the various ways in which Black individuals are not given credit for their work, they reveal that this is a common experience, a problem shared within their community. Their voice is characterized by its use of scenery from nature, as well as the intensity of its emotional tenor.

Others

While never naming them specifically, the speaker also refers to "others" in the poem when describing the appropriation of their labor. In the same way that it can be intuited that the speaker of the poem is Black, it can also be assumed that these "others" are white, as later in the poem the speaker contrasts the beauty of darkness with that of the "white stars." They are shown continually taking advantage of Black people, "cheating" them, and taking the products of their work without compensation or thanks.
