Abolitionist

Someone who advocated for the abolishment of slavery (especially in the institutionalized form).

Maroon Community

A settlement founded by slaves who escaped from captivity in a remote areas where they are free from capture.

Manumission

The act of a slaver freeing their own slaves.

Chattel

Property (in the case of the novel, people) that are able to be moved.

Indentured Servant

A person who signs a contract pledging to work for a specific period of time without salary (and usually in exchange for something). Many received passage to America in exchange for working for wealthy families for several years.

Gullah

An indigenous African-American person living in South Carolina.

Pattyroller

A group of people whose mission was to specifically monitor and police the behavior of slaves.

Sharecropper

A person who farms on land given to them in exchange for a portion of the crop they farm.

Antebellum

A term indicating a period below the Civil War.
