Franny and Zooey Lesson Plan

Introduction to Franny and Zooey

Franny and Zooey is a large component of the Glass family saga, which is the focal point of several other stories by J.D. Salinger. After The Catcher in the Rye was published in 1951 and was such a hit, Salinger wrote about different members of the Glass family, a clan of intellectual and artistic prodigies, in several parts of Nine Stories (1953) as well as in Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction (1963). Like most of Salinger's stories, "Franny" and "Zooey" were originally published in "The New Yorker" magazine, in 1955 and 1957, respectively. The stories were combined into a novel and published in 1961, to near-instant success.
