Fools and Other Stories Irony

The Society's blind faith

It is ironical that the people at the prophetess' town believed that she had put invisible glue on her vine tree and if anyone came near it, they would be held onto the glue until the next morning. This is ironical because the villagers had never seen anyone stuck on the tree or even seen the glue itself yet they dared not to question this belief.

The diversion of the argument on the bus

When a woman raised the question whether it was true that the prophetess had put invisible glue on her vine tree, a man told her that she should stop questioning the belief since she was a woman who did not want to listen to a man. This is ironical because rather than the man speaking on the issue at hand, he wants to bring down the argument just because it was raised by a woman.

Doksi encouraged a fight

It is ironical that Doksi was encouraging a fight in which his brother Mandla would be in. Doksi's should be concerned about this brother's welfare rather than encourage a duel in which he might get hurt. Mandla had four knife wounds as a result of other fights that he had been in.

The Town Members encouraging a fight

In the story of Uncle, the main character's uncle wants to fight Nzulel over a woman. When the two are preparing for tee fight, a crowd gathers around them to encourage the fight rather than to stop it since one or both of them would get injured.

Dramatic Irony on the Holy Water

It is dramatic irony when the nurse is given water she believes has been prayed for by the prophetess yet the readers know that the water is just plain water that the nurse's son had fetched from a tap. The nurse's son had been sent to get holy water from the prophetess which he did but on his way home, the water spilled and he refilled the bottle with tap water.
