The simile of the ninja
The narrator is describing the code of dressing during the disaster. The narrator is comparing Sourcefield's code of dressing to a ninja when saying, “Dressed in a black jumpsuit and sneakers, Sourcefield wore a full mask – like a ninja might wear – and a long black cape.”
The simile of an idiot
The narrator is amazed by Sourcefield's abilities to navigate dangerous situations. She can climb walls and come down the ceilings as the spiderman. This makes the narrator feel he is an idiot because he cannot do what a woman can correctly do. The narrator says, “Feeling like an idiot, I jumped backward just as Sourcefield came down through the ceiling, electricity buzzing all around her."
The simile of falling
The narrator is comparing his experience on the balcony to falling. However, he is aware that the zip line is tightly fixed to the roof, and there is no way he is going to fall, but he is still scared. The skyscrapers passing on either side is making him feel like falling when he says, “Skyscrapers passed me on either side in a blur. I felt like I was falling."
The Simile of the City Buildings
According to the narrator, the Prof is a firm man, and when he stands, he looks like a firm building that cannot be shaken or moved. He is tall and has square features. The narrator compares the Prof to the Immobile city buildings when he says, “He looked solid standing there, arms clasped behind his back. Something stable, immobile, like this city’s buildings themselves.”
The simile of the riffle
The narrator’s preference for guns is compared to the fondness of the Enforcement. According to the narrator, he likes guns having some wood on them because they feel more natural. The narrator says, “This riffle was all plastic and black metal. It was like the weapon’s Enforcement carried.”
