Anastasia Steele
The main protagonist of the story. Ana is trying to start a life without Christian, but is finding it difficult as she is still in love with him. She is also trying to branch out in her career and be more independent, but this desire is refuted by Christian.
Christian Grey
Ana's love interest. After the events of the previous book, when Ana was frightened by his sexual preferences, he is now intent on making her his. He has an infatuation with her that he still does not regard as love. He is also conflicted because though he wants Ana, his troubled past prevents him from opening up to her fully.
José Rodriguez
Ana's friend, who is sexually attracted to her, but the feeling is unrequited. He has known Ana for a while and was gleeful at the opportunity of getting with her after her split from Christian, but eventually realizes she is still in love with him. He is also an artist.
Leila Williams
Christian's ex-Submissive. She has had a mental breakdown after her partner died, and now she is intent on stalking Ana and taking her away from Christian. She is also noted for being very similar looking to Ana.
Jack Hyde
Ana's boss and friend, at least initially. He takes an instant liking to Ana and before long attempts sexual advances on her, which she refutes. He also attempts to rape her but is stopped by Christian. His role is taken away from him and he is left discredited, but desperate to get his vengeance against the two.
