Narrow Circumstances of the Protagonist
Gubart was very bad at playing the violin even though he used to play it for his living. He hardly used to earn something for his family of five. There were times when they had nothing to eat and spent days keeping fast.
A Twist of Fate
Gubart went to play the violin when his wife insisted to him to get something to eat for the children. When Gubart came home, his wife told him that she received a royal letter, in which the king had given the order to give Gubart the rank of a captain. Although, Gubart knew it was not for him though he went to the palace. He persuaded the king and became the real captain. Gubart changed his fate through his wisdom and enjoyed a good life.
Similarity to Arabian Nights
The story is very similar to the stories of the Arabian Nights. The theme of the story is fate because the protagonist's good fortune gave him the chance to change his life.
Luck
In the story, the protagonist was witty and knew to read and count but, he was not lucky to make enough money to survive. When luck decided to knock on his door, he became a captain.
