Why was Lydia so upset that Hannah was wearing her locket?
The locket represented Lydia’s father’s expectations and hopes for her—the way he wanted her to fit in and be popular, the way he wanted her to smile when she wasn’t happy and be agreeable so people would like her. Doing what he wanted had seemed such a light burden at first, as delicate as the silver locket, but it was a trap, a weight around the neck.
