Everyman (Novel) Background

Everyman (Novel) Background

Everyman is a retrospective reflective novel about “everyman”. It is written by Philip Roth and was published in 2006 by Hougton Mifflin at 182 pages. There is an audiobook read by George Guidall which was published shortly after the written version of the book.

Roth's narrative is about an old man, after death, as he looks and remembers his life and everything that spanned through it. It focuses mostly on him and his family, including his own thoughts and feelings. The closeness the book has to the real-life events of its author, Roth, is what is special about this book, as it might have been an unofficial memoir Roth chose to write, without labeling himself during the course of the book.

The book is his first Nemeses book, and the third of his books to win the Faulkner Award. Roth had a bachelor's degree from Bucknell University, as well as a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. He died in 2018, as an 85-year-old man, as one of the most awarded authors of his generation.
