Genealogies and Fandom

Individual Writing

Objective:

Students will write some fan fiction in order to understand how once piece of fiction can lead to others.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.11-12.3

Structure:

To begin the activity, explain to students that Frances Burney is considered a predecessor of Jane Austen, who is famous for Pride and Prejudice. Burney is a writer whom Austen learned from and followed. Then, have students do a Think-Pair-Share in response to the following question: What does it mean to be a fan? Why are fans important? Who are you a fan of? Give students 2 minutes to jot down some notes in response to the question....
