Alfie
Alfie is the name of Mrs Silver’s beloved tortoise. He is a slow growing pet, and this ends up frustrating her as he does not grow over 13 ounces. As such, he is used as pawn by Mr Hoppy and is exchanged with bigger tortoises, without her knowing. Eventually, Alfie is taken to the pet store and is adopted by a young girl.
Mr Hoppy
He is the main protagonist of the story. He is described as being extremely shy, especially around his crush, Mrs Silver. Mr Hoppy is desperate to gain his neighbor Mrs Silver’s, attention and so offers up a fictitious magic spell to make Alfie grow bigger. He then proceeds to spend the next few weeks exchanging the turtles with those of a larger weight.
Mrs Silver
She is Mr Hoppy’s neighbor and also his love interest. She and Mr Hoppy are described as being good friends, but the most important person in her life is her tortoise, Alfie. When Mr Hoppy offers to help her grow Alfie, she begins to care for him and, eventually, marries him.
