Although Escape from Hat, which was published in 2011, was written for a middle school audience, the graphic novel has gained a cult following from people of all ages. The novel tells the whimsical but dark story of dueling "lucky" rabbit (named Leek) and an "evil" black cat (named Millikin), as well as one human boy caught between them (named Cecil Bean). In an effort to defeat Millikin and escape their circumstances, Cecil and Leek work together to fight against Millikin and as the title suggests, escape from the evil land of hat to ensure their own survival.
Escape from Hat is the first novel in what Adam Kline intends to be a series set in the world of hat. A follow-up to Escape from Hat was released in 2018, and additional novels in the series are currently being written and planned.
Escape from Hat will be adapted into a film of the same name. Directed by Mark Osborne (of Kung Fu Panda fame), the film is set to be released on Netflix sometime in 2022.
