Entre Les Murs is French story that has place in a classroom filled with a teacher and his pupils. The special and different part of the story and this particular class, is that it is set in a district in Paris where many of the people are immigrants, thus not being born Frenchmen. Many of the children therefore don’t have French-speaking parents and are thus having a hard time both learning the language and communicating with others.
This is a modern phenomenon that is not only happening in a small district in Paris. Urbanizing, moving and traveling are becoming more and more convenient and accessible to the middle-class, which is why more and more people are doing it. Some are running away from war and poverty while others are looking for a new start, as we see from some of the pupil’s parents in the story. However, this brings forth problems of their own. One of the reasons the class is so divided is because of the diversity in the class, and because the teacher doesn’t know how to deal with it.
Many people therefore believe that the story as a whole can be a demonstration of how to act, making sure you have a positive effect on the people around you. This is something Marin himself was aware of and was trying to change. However, as his patience slowly faded, his true beliefs and actions started coming forth. This is why his action and plan failed.
