Symbol for purity
The poem entitled ‘’Snow’’ has as its main symbol the snow described by the narrator. The snow is presented as being pure and magnificent, like diamonds in a beautiful jewelry. The narrator also talks about snow and how it makes people feel close to heaven. Because of this, we can assume snow is used here as a symbol for purity.
Birds announcing love
One of the common motifs found in the poem is the idea that birds have the power to create love and to transmit the idea of love. The narrator mentions various birds such as the dove as being a bird of love. This is a common motif mentioned both in the poem ‘’Christmas Tide’’ and ‘’Snow’’.
Sounds and spring
One of the common motifs in the poems is the association between the time of spring and sounds. The narrator makes this association because it is during spring time when birds return once more and when the working people get out in the fields and become busy once more. This association is present in the poems ‘’Christmas Tide’’ and ‘’Spring’’.
Symbol for memories
One of the major symbols in the poem ‘’The Old Arm-chair’’ is the armchair. The narrator talks about her memories and the pleasant feelings she has associated with the armchair. Because of this, we can assume the armchair is used here as a symbol for the pleasant memories the narrator has about the past.
Symbol for emotional pain
In the first stanza of the poem ‘’The Old Arm-chair’’ the narrator mentions the chair she grew attached to. She mentions how the chair is soaked with tears and how it heard countless sighs. The two elements mentioned here, tears and sighs, are used as a symbol for emotional pain. Thus, the chair becomes a safe zone for the narrator, somewhere she feels safe.
