Hegel explores the concept of free will. He argues that while free will exists outside of the boundaries of civilization, it is not as powerful in that context. For and individual who has agreed to abide by the social contract, they have agreed to limit their freedom in certain regards, but they also have more opportunity to exercise free will. Hegel believes one must participate in the spheres of property ownership, contracts, more commitment, family, economy, law, and polity in order to fully utilize the benefits of free will.
Hegel next introduces his three spheres of the meaning of "right." The spheres are essentially interlocking layers of domain in which being "right" is desirable. First is Recht or the Abstract Right, which is sort of an instinctual process. He writes briefly about non-interference as a status quo in response to the Abstract Right. Second comes morality which is relatively self-explanatory. Hegel inserts the idea of power structures being used to determine relative moralism in social relationships. Finally there is Ethical Life, which integrates the previous two spheres alongside the individual's personal feelings. The true sense of "right" in any given scenario must satisfy the demands of each of these spheres, although sometimes that ideal is unattainable. Concluding this lengthy discussion, Hegel advocates for the serious involvement of citizens in the functioning of their family, society, and government state.
The final topic discussed relates to the history of civilization. According to Hegel's theory, civilized humanity is self-corrective and progressive. Each successive society or state builds upon the ones before, making improvements. Consequently some systems of value and ethics supersede the immediate rules of a given state because they carry precedence. Society is supposed to preserve the ideas that are successful and beneficial for the majority of the population. In Hegel's view, society has yet to resolve issues of inner-government organization, which is to say the infrastructure of government itself.
