Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine Background

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is a novel written by Scottish author Gail Honeyman, and was first published in 2017 by HarperCollins. It is Honeyman’s debut novel and was the recipient of the Costa Debut Novel Award in 2017.

The book follows 29-year old Eleanor Oliphant, a finance clerk who is a closet alcoholic. She has a host of suppressed childhood trauma that she cannot bring herself to acknowledge, instead turning to alcohol as her savior. Nonetheless, a bit of hope emerges in her life when she gets tickets to visit a local band and immediately falls in love with the lead singer, Johnnie. The story follows the trials and tribulations as Eleanor realizes that maybe she is not “completely fine” after all.

This novel was extremely well received with The Irish Times stating that Eleanor is "one of the most unusual and thought-provoking heroines of recent contemporary fiction." Allan Massie of The Scotsman also called it "an uncommonly intelligent and sympathetic novel."
