The irony of David
David and Efrén are close friends. When David decides to run for the presidency in their school, he asks Efrén to be his chief campaigner. However, when Efrén looks at David’s manifesto, he finds it unconvincing. Instead, Efrén decides to support Jennifer, whose vision aligns with his. When David discovers that Efrén is campaigning for his competitor, he becomes furious. Before the elections, Jennifer leaves the country with her deported mother. Efrén decides to contest for the presidency in the school because he believes he is the best candidate. Ironically, David starts to campaign for Efrén because he has the best vision for the school and the immigrants in America. David’s decision to campaign for Efrén for the presidency is the biggest paradox in the novel.
The irony of coyotes
Coyotes are illogical characters because, despite knowing their activities are illegal, they devise new ways of smuggling undocumented immigrants from Mexico to the United States of America. Characters like Efrén and Jennifer can support the role of coyotes, but deep in their hearts, they know that coyotes are criminals.
Jennifer’s return
When Jennifer’s mother is deported to Mexico, she leaves with her. Therefore, Jennifer’s candidature for the position of the school’s president is left vacant. David becomes very happy because he remains the strongest contestant in the race. Ironically, Jennifer returns a few days to the elections, and David is shocked by the abrupt turn of events. However, Jennifer decides to support Efrén in his candidature because they have similar visions.
