Eavan Boland: Poems Summary

Eavan Boland: Poems Summary

THE POMEGRANATE

The title of the poem is extremely significant as it alludes to the myth of Persephone and the reader may be able to immediately tell what the poem is going to be about. The poet says that this is a tale of "love and blackmail," something that makes it unusual. The speaker says that the legend belongs to both her and her daughter and can be accessed by them anytime anywhere.

MY COUNTRY IN DARKNESS

The poem is set in Ireland. As the title suggests, the poem describes the poet's country in darkness. There is a sinister aura at this time to his country. He focuses on a man who has no comfort or food, and he make even poetry seems like a dangerous art.

OUTSIDE HISTORY

The poet claims that stars are outsiders to the pains of the humans. While they came thousands of years before humans did, they are insular to their pain. It is under the stars' light that humanity found itself. Now they weep for their dying brothers and sisters but it is too late.
