E. E. Cummings: Poems Characters

E. E. Cummings: Poems Character List

Humanity

In the poem "Humanity" humanity is personified as a single person whom the speaker of the poem is addressing. The speaker of the poem expresses his love to humanity in an ironic manner.

Maggie, Milly, Molly and May

These are the four child characters from a rather short poem "Maggie and Milly and Molly and May". The poem is quite paradoxical as it uses a nursery rhyme type of poetry to express a deeper, one could say, adult meaning. Maggie discovers a shell, Milly befriends a star and Molly is chased by a horrible thing and May is the only girl that comes back home with a round stone, meaning that the three other girls are left on the beach.

Jake, Paul, Gus and Mike

"Jake Hates All the Girls" is a rhythmic poem that describes the like or dislike of the types of girls by these four dudes. Jake hates all the girls except the cold ones. Paul scorns all the girls except the dull ones. Gus loves all the girls except the dead ones and Mike likes all the girls except the green ones.
