Jiang Li-ling
Jiang is the main protagonist of the story and spends her time uncovering the secrets of her dad’s involvement in China’s brutal past. She and Ai-ming work together to understand the history behind her family’s upbringing.
Ai-ming
Ai-ming is the daughter of Jiang Li-ling’s best friend who was persecuted by the Chinese government. She is a refugee who arrives to Canada seeking a place to live, and finds kinship with Jiang Li-ling.
Jiang Kai
Jiang Kai is Jiang Li-ling’s father, who committed suicide when she was a child. Kai was a talented pianist, although he had a brutal past in Communist China, which required him to leave for the US and give us his dreams of being a concert pianist.
