    Why does the story open in Rome? What expectations are built by the Prologue?

    Students should note that the Prologue emphasizes the luxury enjoyed by everyone there, and how distant it is from New Mexico. Although the assembled priests have ideas about New Mexico, they don't have first-hand knowledge and take arrogant, Eurocentric views of the area. Students may find that the Prologue invites them to be skeptical of Latour, even before he shows up in the actual book.
