Sam
The main character of the book, Sam was left by his father, who married another woman and had a child with her. Sam is shattered by his father's actions and is left feeling betrayed. After all, he idolized his father and never would have expected him to do such a thing.
Sam is a highly intelligent and compassionate boy capable of doing quite a bit; however, he is confused and angry because of his father's actions. Because of this, he looks both externally and internally to find answers, comfort, and if he can, solace.
Ishmael
Ishmael is used by author Nikki Grimes as a parallel for Sam. Like Sam, Ishmael was essentially abandoned by his father after another baby was born into the house - called Isaac, who God establishes the covenant with. Ishmael and his mother, much like Sam and his mother, were banished to the desert after the arrival of a new child.
Ishmael is an intelligent, caring, and courageous young boy capable of profound love. He is a good boy who is deeply disappointed.
Sam's Father
Arguably the main antagonist of the novel, Sam's father left Sam and his wife (Sam's mother) so that he could marry another woman and have a child with her. Sam and his mother are understandably heartbroken with this news. He is a cruel man more concerned with his own personal satisfaction than the needs and the feelings of his once-prized son and his ex-wife.
