Chapter 2

Once Mrs. Costello's headache clears up, Winterbourne goes to see her. He asks her about the Miller family, and Mrs. Costello, a wealthy widow, expresses her dislike of them. She considers herself part of exclusive social circles in New York and thinks Daisy Miller is "common". Mrs. Costello thinks Daisy has some charm but still sees her as lower in social status.
