Joy Harjo
Crazy Brave is a true story, and Joy Harjo, the author of it, is the main character. Joy Harjo grew up as a Native American, and had to deal with an abusive stepfather. By attending a boarding school, she learned the ways of Native Americans, and found that she preferred that much more than living with her stepfather. Joy Harjo also became a mother as a teenager, and faced scrutiny from those around her. The main character and protagonist of the book, Harjo had to jump through many obstacles to get to where she is today.
Harjo's Father and Stepfather
Harjo's father and stepfather are, in a way, like the same person. Ever since an early age, Harjo remembered when her father was abusive to her, and his love for alcohol. Her mother, unable to deal with him any longer, left him. In response, she married another man. At first, he seemed like a nice person, but he developed into an abusive man as well. Harjo suffered at the wrath of both of these men.
