Larkin is the main speaker in the poem. Throughout the poem, Philip narrates about his boring childhood and his thrilling adulthood. Specifically, Larkin is eager to welcome spring season which is a good weather and season. Winter is a bad season, and according to Larkin, it is a symbol of unhappiness.

The shrub is the bird that sings beautifully at the garden to usher in the new season. The speaker argues that the bird’s voice symbolizes good things to come, and the bird’s voice is astonishing with a deep message of hope.
