How Karma Affects the Characters in Cloud Atlas Anonymous 12th Grade

Cloud Atlas is a very confusing story at first, with many interconnected storylines and characters spanning hundreds of years. One of the driving forces of this movie is the idea of karma and being reborn over and over again, each new life being better or worse depending on what you did in your past life. This means the same characters are present in all of these six stories told within Cloud Atlas, but they change genders, races, and roles in the story as well whether they become a protagonist or become more antagonistic. Three actors who’s characters played a large role in all of these stories are Tom Hanks, Jim Broadbent, and Halle Berry. All of these actors’ characters change drastically throughout the different stories as karma takes hold as they die and are reborn.

One of the main actors followed throughout many of the stories is Tom Hanks. His example of progression in this story is a good example of how positive karma and turn someone from a selfish and evil person, into a loving character over time. Chronologically, he starts off as a doctor trying to poison Jim Sturgess’ character, in order to kill him and steal his possessions and gold.
