Claude McKay: Poems Characters

Claude McKay: Poems Character List

America

In the poem entitled "America’’, the country becomes the major character in the poem. America is described by the narrator as being a ruthless woman who takes advantage of him, making him feel drained and as if his youth was being stolen from him. America is thus portrayed here as an extremely abusive person who takes advantage of everyone she can.

The narrator in "America''

The narrator is also the main character and he presents himself as being abused by the new country in which he moved into. The narrator is however sure he wants to continue living there and thus he is reluctant to give in and decides he must continue fighting and staying in that country.

The father

In the poem "Mulatto’’, the narrator talks about his father and how he was a white man. The narrator transmits the idea that maybe he was abandoned by his father and this made him hate the man he never knew. The narrator was so mad at his own father that he claimed to be capable of killing him.

The small boy

The small boy is a character who appears in "The Lynching’’. He is killed by a group of men and he later is taken to heaven.

The father

The father is another character who appears in "The Lynching’’. He is the one who takes the small boy killed by the men. It is possible that the father refers to some type of divinity, most probably the Christian God.

The boys

The boys appear also in the poem "The Lynching’’. The narrator does not write about their numbers only about their actions and how they killed the boy. They later dance around the dead body.

The women

The women appear in "The Lynching’’ as spectators to the gruesome murder of the small boy. They just watch from afar and decide not to get involved and not to try and stop the other boys from killing the small boy.
