Chocolat is a cinematically renowned drama, based on the book of the same name by Joanne Harris. The movie was releases on December 15, 2000, by Miramax films, and was directed by Lasse Hallström.

The movie tells the story of Vianne Rocher, and her daughter, Anouk, as they take residence in a small French village. However, she is met with much animosity and resistance from Mayor Reynaud’s, a devout Christian man, who believes that Vianne’s desire to open a chocolate shop during the season of Lent is a source of temptation and sin. The movie also focuses on the new relationships Vianne forms with members of the town, through providing advice and helping out with their problems.

The movie was met with much critical claim, having been nominated for five Academy Awards, four Golden Globes Awards and eight BAFTAs. Judi Dench, playing the role of Armande, also won a Screen Actors Guild award for her work. Notable cast members in the film include: Juliette Binoche as Vianne, Johnny Depp as love interest, Roux, and Alfred Molina as Mayor Reynaud.
