The books symbolize the power of knowledge. In the novel's first chapter, the narrator says that her silly business is reading many books. The narrator's inspiration to become a successful author is drawn from reading many books. The narrator is motivated to be like the successful other authors. By reading many books, the narrator learns several writing styles and tactics that help her become an accomplished author.

The class teacher

The narrator’s class teacher symbolizes humility and care. When Mr. Burton discovers that the narrator has drawn his picture at the back of her book with descriptions about him, he does not get angry. Instead, he calls the narrator to learn more about the drawing. Mr. Burton handles the issue maturely with care and humility, encouraging the narrator to keep her fire burning until she excels in her writing career.

True love

The narrator's second boyfriend symbolizes true love. The boyfriend encourages the narrator to continue reading more books. In fact, the boyfriend suggests books the narrator can read to enhance her creativity and imagination. In addition, the boyfriend gives the narrator time and support she needs to balance her studies, writing, and caring for each other.
