Carry On, Mr. Bowditch Character List

Nathaniel "Nat" Bowditch

Nathaniel (nicknamed "Nat") Bowditch is the protagonist of Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. Bowditch is a real historical figure who grew up and spent much of his life in Salem, Massachusetts, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Nat, who at a young age was forced to forgo formal education to help his family escape their financial troubles, is a prodigy. After he no longer has access to education, he turns to books about a variety of subjects. He becomes a talented mathematician and self-taught, first-class navigator through sheer force of will and determination.

Despite facing quite a few challenges throughout his life, including being pulled out of school to support his family and later enduring the loss of loved ones, Nat remains committed to his studies. He knows that he will find freedom from his studies and his knowledge base. Over time, Nat earns a reputation as an intelligent and formidable sailor. Early on in his sailing career, Nat discovers that the navigational charts that he and other sailors rely on are flawed. As a result of this, he dedicated much of his life to the creation of a book he called The American Practical Navigator, which he hoped would revolutionize the navigational processes aboard ships. It ultimately did and gained Bowditch renown in the United States and abroad.

Mary (Polly) Bowditch

Mary, often referred to as Polly, is Nat's younger sister. She is a loving and supportive figure in his life, sharing a close bond with him. Polly serves as an anchor for Nat, offering emotional support and understanding during their childhood and beyond.

Polly's character represents the familial bond that grounds individuals amidst life's turbulence. Her unwavering support for Nat underlines the significance of close family ties in personal development and resilience. Through Polly, we also get glimpses of the domestic and social expectations of women during that period, offering a contrast to Nat's more adventurous endeavors.

Elizabeth Boardman

Elizabeth Boardman is Nat's wife. She is understanding and patient and is a pillar of strength for Nat during their marriage, especially given the unpredictability of living as a sailor's wife. Elizabeth embodies the sacrifices that are often made by those who love individuals with demanding professions. She takes care of their children and likewise takes care of their home so that Nat can pursue his dreams.

Captain Prince

Captain Prince is a fellow sailor who recognizes and nurtures Nat's talent as a mathematician and navigator. He provides Nat with opportunities to grow and learn and trusts him with significant responsibilities on their voyages together. Ultimately, his confidence is rewarded.
