Irony of Marcus
The central irony in the novel is that readers are constantly reminded that Marcus comes from a wealthy family. Ironically, Marcus has a deformed dental formula with a drawing concentrated within his teeth. When other kids ask why his parents cannot take him to the dentist, Marcus says they cannot afford the dentist's fee. Consequently, readers find it ironic that Marcus' parents can afford to buy him expensive toys but fail to take him to the dentist.
The coolest present in the world
When Mike buys a cheap cardboard as a birthday present for his son, Cam, he thinks he will dislike it. Ironically, Cam receives the cardboard gift warmly and builds a boxer out of it with his father. At night, the boxer comes to life, and Cam names it Bill. The two become best friends, and Cam thanks his father for giving him the coolest birthday present in the world.
The irony of Marcus wanting a friend

The monsters turn against Marcus and he starts crying for Cam to help. Ironically, Marcus thinks he can oppress anyone because he is rich, but when in problems, he notices that money and his wealthy parents cannot help him.
