    Consider the meanings of the names which Voltaire gives to his main characters. Which of these names stand out to you the most, and why?

    Some of the names employed in this chapter are sophisticated puns: the name “Pangloss”, for example, refers to the character’s apparent erudition across many different subject matters. Others are less sophisticated: Candide’s name fittingly simple reference to his simple and naïve nature. And then some of the other puns rely on ribaldry or grotesquerie, such as “Cunégonde” or “Thunder-ten-tronckh”.
