André Aciman’s 2017 novel Enigma Variations is another exploration of desire, love, and infatuation, some of which takes place in Italy. His two other novels, Harvard Square and Eight White Nights, may also be worth considering.
The novel Call Me By Your Name was adapted into a 2017 film directed by Luca Guadagnino.
Consider The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith (and its film adaptation, "Carol"), which deals with similar themes of queerness and sexual discovery. Also consider South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami, which deals with lost and found love and nostalgia.
