Recollections from the past

When David hears the tune of “ Walter Wildflower ”, he understands that he knows this song. Courtesy of familiar music, the boy’s soul is “ filled with a warm, nostalgic mournfulness ”. He closes his eyes and sees “ fragments of forgotten rivers ” and “ dusty roads ”. David knows that this world from his fantasies “ somewhere, somewhere else ”. This imagery shows a reader how someone could feel nostalgia even not remembering how his or her Motherland looks.

Wrath

David knows better than to argue with his father, but Genya tries to help her husband. That was why, when he started complaining about mockery and humiliation, she gathered all her courage and “ dared to say that perhaps the men weren’t really looking at him crookedly ”. His father “ snarled then ”. “ And with one sudden sweep of his arm he had sent food and dishes crashing to the floor”. David also remembers “ the door being kicked open and his father coming in and looking pale and savage ”. This imagery gives an impression of frustration and a strong feeling of anger, which one can feel when he doesn’t find the needed support.

A melting pot

People of different races came to the USA to look for a better life. There were “ most volatile races ” such as Italians , who “ often danced for joy ”. There were calm and collected Swedes, who were looking at each other “ like a panting dog ”. There were also “ Jews ”, “ Poles ”, “ the English” and many others. They all expressed their happiness differently, but the one thing which united all of them was a hope. They all hoped to have a happy life in the USA. This imagery helps to create an impression of a melting pot.
