Caliban's War Background

Caliban's War Background

Caliban's War is the second novel in James S.A. Corey's (the pen name for authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) "The Expanse" series. Caliban's War takes place in three places: Ganymede, Earth, and a spaceship. The story of Ganymede follows a Martian marine who is the lone survivor after the rest of their squad is brutally killed by a seemingly all-powerful supersoldier. The soldier must contend with their emotions while trying to survive the super soldier. Meanwhile, politicians from the United Nations on Earth (which is ruling the planet) trying their hardest to maintain their grasp on their tenuous alliance with the Martians and prevent a war—a war which would no doubt cause tremendous death and destruction for both sides. Finally, the story on the spaceship, which sees the crew eventually makes their way to Ganymede, follows James Holden and his crew on the Rocinante as they try to prevent war between humanity and the Martians and as they try to keep the peace in the Outer Planets Alliance, which has been deemed by some to be a terrorist organization.

When it was published in mid-2012, Caliban's War received very positive reviews upon its release. Indicating the novel's popularity, Caliban's War and its predecessor Leviathan's War were used to help create the SyFy/Amazon series The Expanse. In their review of the novel, for example, Kirkus Reviews wrote that Corey's novel is "independently intelligible but best appreciated after volume one—and with a huge surprise twist in the last sentence."
