Bruce Dawe: Poetry Character List

Alice

Alice is the wife of the protagonist of "Enter Without So Much as Knocking." She seems to represent the humdrum chaos of life to him. In the end she drives a little too fast around a curve which lands both halves of the couple in their graves.

Jim Jessup

In "Enter Without So Much as Knocking," Jim is one of the protagonist's friends as an adult. They attend a dinner party at Jim's house on the night they die.

Clare Jessup

She's Jim's wife and Alice's friend. She cooks for them and all round is a hospitable host. The protagonist later comments about her curves, so she most likely is a little rotund.

The Drill Master

The man is delivering a lecture in "Weapons Training." He does not seem particularly fond of the soldiers he's training. In fact he engages in a great deal of verbal abuse of each of them. Whether he's just a soldier through and through or some sort of misanthrope, the man seems angry. His training method is beratement and insults.
