Blood Wedding is set in rural Spain in the 1930s, at a time when women had few rights. Women were expected to get married and have a family, and generally could not exist independently without a male partner in the world. The Bride loves Leonardo and wishes to be with him instead of the Bridegroom, yet she also resents the obligations imposed on her as a woman to get married at all. She's expressing her taste for independence and perhaps adventure.
