Describe the war-sickness. How does it impact Antonio and his family?
The war-sickness could refer to Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD), which was not considered an official disorder until after the Vietnam War. The memories of war haunt Antonio’s brothers and affect their ability to sleep and find stability in their civilian lives. Leon has nightmares, which is a common symptom of PTSD. Antonio is fearful and worried about his brothers. The young men have returned home, but their minds are still at war in some ways. This reminds Antonio of Lupito, whose mind was also still at war.
