Thomas says this to Nina. It is a direct and impactful statement that reveals something that is true for many, that the obstacle is not external, but within.
"The role's destroying you."
Erica, Nina's mother, tells her daughter this on the day of her performance. Erica has already called the theatre to tell them Nina isn't feeling well. She sees her daughter is not well and it is because of the part she is playing.
"I want to be perfect."
Nina says this to Thomas when she is asking for the lead in Swan Lake. She believes she can play the black swan as well, but Thomas isn't convinced. Her idea of perfection is not the same as his, which is that perfection is discipline and letting go, transcendence.
