Black Narcissus (1947 Film) Irony

Human Desires

The nuns sent to Mopu to build a convent and to help the people there are tested more so than ever by the strange and openness of the place. They start to self reflect and learn more about their humanity and desires. Sister Ruth gives completely into her desires and ironically is the one that gets killed in the end - indicating that human desires are what destroy us or they are the mistakes that make us human.

Resolve

The sisters are sent to the mountain top to open a school and a hospital. When they learn that the children are being paid to arrive at the school, these women quickly dismiss the notion of helping them and abandon their hope all too easily. The irony is here that the sisters are meant to be with steel resolves and are on a mission to help them yet they fall prey giving up at the first obstacle that comes their way.

The House of Women/The House of Faith

The general Toda Rai gives the sisters a place for them to start a new foundation of their order on Mopu. The place that is meant to be a base for the sisters' operations, we learn, was used for keeping the ladies for the general’s father. This is a pleasure house of sorts that’s now, ironically, been reassigned as a nunnery.
