Tracker
A man self-identified only as Tracker starts off the story with a first-person account of an interrogation by a grand inquisitor. He informs the reader that while he once did have a name, it has long since been forgotten. We will also learn the single most defining characteristic of Tracker: he possesses a sense of smell which is nothing less than magical.
Leopard
Leopard--who is also know by a few other names--is also a hunter, but more importantly, a shape-shifter. Leopard seeks Tracker's help in locating a boy who has gone missing from the homes of an elder because Tracker has become legendary for using his incredible sense of smell to find missing children.
Sogolon
Sogolon is a Moon Witch who will rise to the level of titular character in the novel's sequel. Conspiracy theories arise to suggest a darker story behind the tale of the missing boy, but Sogolon will eventually explain that the boy is not what the rumors insist, but is rather son to Lissisolo, the King's sister, and rightful heir to the throne.
Sangoma
Sangoma is called an antiwitch, but is actually a healer. The healing powers are primarily directed toward the protection of children who in our world might be labeled as being "different." Which is to say, children demonstrating powers and aptitudes considered strange enough to result in ostracism. Sangoma is therefore particularly drawn to Tracker because of his connection to children.
Kwash Dara
Kwash Dara, brother of Lissisolo, is the King of the North Kingdom who is also known as the Spider King. His edict of a grain tax from the lands of the elders is unprecedented and when they refuse to pay, he decides to jail them until they do pay. Before that can happen, however, a terrible rain produces a flood which kills many makes the Spider King a hated figure.
The Aesi
The Aesi is the Chancellor to the Spider King. More than that, he is a very powerful sorcerer capable of launching monsters both real and psychological against Tracker and his crew. In addition, he also exhibits the power to control the minds and actions of masses at will.
