The Narrator
The unnamed narrator watched the violence unfold during The Troubles of the 1960’s. He witnesses the homemade bombs, referred to as “confetti”, covering the streets he has lived in his entire life. He is looking for a way out, not only from the danger, but also questioning his identify as an Irishman.
The Rioters
The Rioters are taking over the streets and are throwing household bombs, made of everything from “Nuts, bolts, nails, car-keys.” They are turning people’s home into a dangerous place and everyone is running trying to find a way to escape. The violence is causing a loss of identity or perhaps, a new identity for the Irish people, through trying to gain independence.
