Before the Fall Background

Before the Fall Background

Before the Fall, written by Noah Hawley, tells the story of a starving artist with a passion for painting named Scott Burroughs and a four-year-old boy born to a wealthy family surviving a deadly plane crash into the ocean. They are the only ones left standing after several other wealthy passengers lose their lives, in addition to crew members on the plane. This includes a Wall Street business man and his wife as well as a career pilot.

Each chapter following the accident reveals more about the complex identities of the passengers, which leave readers questioning more about why the accident took place. Uncovering the truth reveals the possibility that the accident was set up to take out a bunch of wealthy, influential people. On the other hand, it could just be an unfortunate coincidence that such people died in the crash. The relationship that Scott and the young boy develop after the crash sheds light on the ups and downs of human nature as well as how their different backgrounds prove to be a less of a barrier to their blossoming connection than one may have thought on the surface.

Hawley is an award-winning author, screenwriter, and producer. His collection of awards include an Emmy, PEN, Golden Globe, Peabody, and Critics' Choice. He has worked on TV projects such as Bones and Fargo.
