Badlands (1973 Film) Themes

violence

Violence is one big theme in the movie, starting from how Holly’s father shooting. From there on, Kit goes on a killing spree first killing Holly's father, then moving on to kill the bounty hunters and his friend Cato. The interesting thing is how this movie portrays violence in a unique way, one that has influenced the likes of Oliver Stone, Quentin Tarantino, and Bruce Springsteen

Love

The whole movie starts of as a forbidden love theme movie. We see that literally in the way that Kit who is 25 falls in love with Holly who is 15. Their love for one another is rebuked by Holly’s dad, and it end up with him killing her dog. In the name of love Kit, kill her dad and they run of together.

Fame

Fame also seems to be a relevant theme in this movie, especially where character motivations are concerned. The whole character Kit sees himself as an outlaw in the movie and revels in the fame he gets from being hunted by the police and bounty hunters. The drive within Kit is no longer love, as the movie moves towards the end. He seeks fame.
