Underlying Themes of Babel 12th Grade
The movie Babel consists of 3 different stories, all interconnected by themes and ideas that are shared by the different stories. The three main themes that connect these stories are the loss of innocence as someone gets older, the idea of prejudice against people who are different, and language barriers or the lack of ability to communicate. All of these themes show up in different ways throughout the story, but are present in their own ways in each of the three different stories told in the movie.
The first major theme that is shown throughout the three stories told in the movie is the idea of the loss of innocence. Some of the main characters in each of the three stories are all children or young adults of various ages, and in each story, as the children or child in question becomes older, they are seen with less innocence. An example of this is how the youngest children shown are the two white children traveling with their babysitter down to Mexico, the kids themselves do nothing wrong at all, but are still put into a terrifying and unfortunate scenario.
