Babel Background

Babel Background

R.F. Kuang's Babel was published in 2022 by HarperCollins. The year is 1828, and cholera has run roughshod in Canton, Wales, leaving Robin Swift orphaned. Desperate and alone, Robin is brought to London by mysterious Professor Lovell to train in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese. All of his work and preparation is in preparation for the day he will begin the program at Oxford University called "Babel." Babel, after all, is the world's home to translation and magic. But as Robin learns more about Babel, he is confronted with ugly truths. Working in Babel, Robin discovers that he must betray his homeland and work against the interests of China, his birth country, in favor of Great Britain, which desires to control the world. That moral quandary is at the center of the novel: should Robin be loyal to his adopted country, or his home country?

Kuang's novel was incredibly well-reviewed at the time of its release. Writing for The Guardian, Natasha Pulley wrote "This is a grim and harrowing novel... It is a fantastically made work, moving and enraging by turns, with an ending to blow down walls." Other reviewers felt very similarly. Readers felt the same way, too. The novel has sold briskly since its release in the late summer of 2022.

"Babel," penned by R. F. Kuang, is a riveting addition to the genre of fantasy literature that continues the epic tale begun in the highly acclaimed novel "The Poppy War." As the second installment in The Poppy War trilogy, "Babel" delves deeper into the intricate and morally complex world crafted by Kuang. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a war-torn empire inspired by Chinese history, where the protagonist, Rin, grapples with the consequences of her choices and the weight of wielding immense power.

Building on the foundation laid in the first book, "Babel" immerses readers in a world of political intrigue, magic, and warfare. Kuang's storytelling prowess is on full display as she weaves together elements of history, mythology, and complex character dynamics. The novel explores themes of power, identity, and the often devastating costs of war, offering readers a thought-provoking and emotionally charged narrative.

With a keen eye for detail and a penchant for subverting genre expectations, R. F. Kuang crafts a tale that captivates both seasoned fantasy enthusiasts and newcomers alike. "Babel" not only expands the narrative scope of The Poppy War trilogy but also solidifies Kuang's place as a standout voice in contemporary fantasy literature, showcasing her ability to blend historical inspiration with compelling characters and intricate world-building.
