Timothy Snyder, born in 1969 in Dayton, Ohio, is an American historian currently at Yale University, where he is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History. He received a B.A. in European history and political science from Brown University in 1991 and completed his doctorate as a British Marshall Scholar at Oxford. He speaks five and reads ten European languages. He is married and has two children.
He has held many fellowships in America and Europe and received innumerable awards and prizes for his writing, including the Hannah Arendt Award for Political Thought, the Phi Beta Kappa Emerson Book Award, the Le Prix du livre d’Histoire de l’Europe, and the Literature Award, American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is a permanent fellow at the Institute of Human Sciences in Vienna, has received Carnegie and Guggenheim fellowships, and holds state orders from Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland. He is frequently a commentator in documentaries and on history and political podcasts. His website states that “his books have inspired poster campaigns and exhibitions, films, sculpture, a punk rock song, a rap song, a play, and an opera. His words are quoted in political demonstrations around the world, most recently in Hong Kong.”
