Art and the Bible Metaphors and Similes

Almond-blossoms

Referring to a biblical passage, the author quotes that "three cups made like almond-blossoms in one branch, a knop and a flower; and three cups made like almond blossoms in the other branch." Here, a simile is used to describe how they are made "like almond blossoms."

Taking your breath away

When describing a form of art in the bible, Schaeffer states that it "simply takes our breath away." This metaphor is used to suggest that the creations are so beautiful that they create a powerful sense of shock and wonder.

Focus his gaze

At the beginning of the book, Schaeffer asks whether a Christian should "focus his gaze steadily on religious things." This metaphor is used to describe how a Christian should direct their attention and lifestyle towards their religious faith.

Wrestle metaphor

Schaeffer uses a metaphor to explain how artists struggle to reconcile their religious belief and creativity:

"The very thing that a modern artist wrestles with, these artists had to wrestle with."

The riches of the Bible

The value of the bible is metaphorically described as giving readers "riches." Schaeffer uses this metaphor in order to emphasize the valuable lessons and teachings the bible contains for Christians.
