Written in 1993, Arcadia interweaves two stories with two sets of characters, one set in 19th Century England at the very beginning of the Regency Era, the other in modern day. Despite the years between them, both stories are set in the same room of an aristocratic country estate--the fictional Sidley Park. The 19th-century plot tells the story of the relationship between Thomasina Coverly, who is thirteen at the top of the play, and her tutor Septimus Hodge, who is in love with her mother Lady Croom, but has become entangled in a drama with some other guests on the estate.
