Handling Systemic Challenges
Describe your experiences facing or witnessing discrimination. Tell us how you responded and what you learned from those experiences and how they have prepared you to contribute to the EWU community.
“Hey!” I say cheerfully as I lace my basketball shoes. Three girls look at me and snicker. As I leave my teammate Milica says, “Don’t let them get to you. They’re Albanian, so they’re rude to all Serbians.” My eyes widen in shock. Of course there were ethnic tensions between Albanians and Serbians, but I thought those died with our grandparents. This experience opened my eyes to prejudices that can last generations. I want to combat this type of discrimination by bringing people of various ethnic backgrounds together. I plan to take a leadership position in Amnesty International at OSU.
